RTP Co. says it has developed conductive extrusion compounds with improved consistency in conductivity and mechanical properties.

The Winona, Minn., company says it makes the conductive extrusion compounds on dedicated equipment designed for uniform dispersion of carbon black. The high degree of dispersion allows more consistent properties, including electrostatic discharge protection.

RTP says its new products address extrusion problems with inconsistent dispersion and less-than-ideal levels of carbon black. Thin extrusions are particularly susceptible to problems if dispersion is not consistent over the entire extruded product. RTP claims it selects the polymer and filler to give the best results.

“Extrusion compounds require special attention to both formulation and manufacturing details,” notes conductive products marketing manager Neil Hardwick.

Flexible extrusion applications include vacuum hoses, electrostatic dissipative tubing, wire and cable and geomembranes. Industrial pipes and electrostatic dissipative packaging sheets are examples of rigid conductive extrusions.

RTP says it can build conductive polymers based on a broad range of resins, including PVC, thermoplastic polyurethanes and elastomers, polycarbonate, polyolefins and styrenics.
